This is a question at the heart of this site; so one to which I will frequently return. Initial reflections here on owning an 80 year old bike.

How much of the technology on which we base our lives today will still be usable in 80 years - even by enthusiasts? Most of it is unrepairable because the digital components are so complicated it is well outside the competence of the home DIYer. Much of that lack of repairability is because it has been consciously designed to be obsolete in 5 years and then probably in landfill.
