It is much easier to see just how shoddy is so much of modern life when working in the close of one of the finest medieval Cathedrals in the world.
Here is something built to last - 800 years to date. Here is something of outstanding quality. As it was built it used the finest materials and finest craftsmen around at the time.
As a Catheral it was built very quickly - around 40 years. And then added to and finished off (if a cathedral like this can ever said to be finished) over the following centuries.
Today we are obsessed with the new. We want it now - not in 40 years time; and modern westerners have almost no interest in building something for subsequent generations.
